how to market on pinterest.

Since March 2010 Pinterest has become one of the top 3 popular social media sites. Women are the main audience of Pinterest. Pinterest has become so popular with females because the content on the site is normally DIY, weddings, or beauty. Because Pinterest has become so popular brands are trying their hardest to tap into this audience through the site. They are flooding the main page with pictures pinned by workers of companies. I personally hate all the products that have taken over the front pages. Oscar De La Renta and Honda have gotten by attention by taking different marketing approaches with Pinterest. Oscar De La Renta has been known for posting live photos of his shows on different social media sites like Tumblr. Oscar De La Renta has recently live pinned the bridal show. The team posted photos of the models before, during, and after the show. With such a huge bridal audience on Pinterest this was a great marketing move. Honda, a car company, is taking steps away from the normal product promotion. Their approach is giving top pinners 500 dollars to get them off their computer and to the places they have been pinning about. Along with posting pictures of their cars Honda’s social media campaign that includes Pinterest for the first time has gotten a lot of attention through the social media world. Pinterest is such a different type of social media that it offers companies to be creative and take different approaches in product promotion.

The uncredible source.

I have always been told wikipedia is not a credible source because anyone can change it and anyone can add the articles, but how is that different than huffington post and social media sites? These days real news comes from the population. It spreads on twitter and facebook like wildfire before it gets to the main news sources like CNN and Fox. Social media sites and online blogs are becoming the places that people check to find out about current events. People turn to social media even to start a revolution or share an idea. My big question is when are schools going to let blogs, wikipedia, and huffington post count as sources for research. In the advertising and marketing field you rely on what your target audience is thinking, saying, and sharing. My school research comes from databases and reliable sources but when do those reliable sources become reliable? I am sure Mashable and other famous trustworthy social media blogs started out as just blogs, when did they become reliable? Is it when a company starts around this site? when respectable news sources start reposting your articles? when you have over 2,000,000 followers on twitter? In my opinion the internet is full of people writing whatever they want. I am not sure what makes these “credible” sources credible, but if you ask me to tell you about something in the news or a historical event I go straight to wiki, twitter, or google to find the most recent news. I am curious to see how children in the next ten years learn how to research. Go ahead and quote this blog post because it is obviously as reliable as wikipedia and you know when you are researching you trust wiki over a lot of other sources.

Social Media 101 (this one’s for you mom)

Facebook: a place to stay up to date with friends near and far. Post pictures and statuses to keep your friends informed on what you are doing. Used by anyone, any age, anywhere in the world.

Twitter: Take your facebook status’s cut them down to 140 words and you have twitter. Little blurbs from the mind take over my twitter feed. Quick easy way to interact with your friends, celebrities, bands, and comedians, as well as companies. Can be used by anyone, any age, but Twitter is more personal and is only fun if you have friends to follow in my opinion.

LinkedIn: Facebook for the business world. LinkedIn is like a virtual job fair, you are defined by your job and past experiences and you connect with people you have professionally worked with. This is a great profile to develop if you are looking for a job and need to connect with people in your field. There is also a feature on LinkedIn that lets you post articles and share blog posts about things in your field.

Instagram: A mobile app that has taken over picture sharing. Instagram has just recently been added to the android market making it accessible for all smart phones. This app lets you take pictures, give them a filter, and share them with your followers on instagram, twitter, and facebook.

Pinterest: Pinterest has quickly become every women on social media’s favorite site. It is a website used to share ideas, pictures, clothes, and everything else on the internet in one place. Pinterest has multiple uses: if you find something on a website you like you can add it to your virtual pinboard or if you like something on pinterest that your friend pinned you can repin it and add it to your board to save it for later.

Mashable: This is not a social media site but it is a site i visit daily. Mashable is the news room of social media. Check out this site for articles on your favorite social media sites and technology.

The Other Pinterest

Pinterest is a great place to find products you love. But what if you find something that you love that has no link. I have franticly searched the internet for those shoes or those earrings and have come up with nothing. There is an alternative. Wanelo is a lot like Pinterest but it is only made for products. All the pictures are linked to the website the product came from. Wanelo offers a button to put on the top of your browser like Pinterest does to allow you to “save things” you find online. Wanelo has a similar layout to Pinterest, everything is in squares in a grid on the website. On Wanelo you can follow people, stores, or collections. It is a lot like Pinterest minus the photography, the weddings, and the quotes. Just think of it as an internet store with all your favorite products in one place.

also this is the funniest blog i have ever visited:

What I would have seen if I went to SXSW

SXSW is the perfect conference for me, a music festival and an interactive conference in one place at one time??? SXSW is an Interactive, Music, and Film Festival that takes place annually in March. SXSW has become huge over the past few years, it is in Austin, TX and is almost a week long.  I feel like my twitter feed and all my go-to websites have been flooded with information about SXSW this week. This might be because I primarily follow bands and social media sites on twitter and read news on these two topics daily. SXSW interactive was the launching site of Twitter and Foursquare and is the conference that anyone who is anyone in the social media world attends. The music side has grown so much over the past few years with over i was going to list bands that performed but i was too overwhelmed by the list. SXSW is more that just a few shows, SXSW is all day and all night because of all the after parties and all the visitors that take over Austin for the 5 days in March. After reading all the tweets and watching all the videos I have realized I would have been so over whelmed and I would have probably looked like a chicken with my head cut off. If i did attend a few things I would have wanted to see if I was in Austin this week include:

-Jay-Z’s american express show used to promote american express’s new twitter partnership. This concert was streamed live on the internet and is still available if you would like to watch it.

– I would have supported the homeless hot spots. A cool idea of making homeless people in Austin hot spots for the week.

– I would have attended the acting class taught by the director of arrested development!

-I would have tried to see a lot of concerts especially Bruce Springsteen’s.

-I would have liked to hear about the the release of the new app “highlight.” An app that connects you to people around you that have similar interests. Meeting strangers walking down the street might be social media’s newest idea…..

– And most importantly I would have networked at all the parties. Journalist, musicians, actors, marketing gurus, social media geniuses and everyone in between are in attendance at the SXSW after parties. These parties are based on networking, maybe I could have used the new Highlight app to see who I could have potentially talked to.

Gary Sharma described SXSW as “A rollercoaster of parties, people, apps, marketing stunts, long lines, free food, fire dancers, business cards, party buses, taco trucks, drunken tweets, celebrity sightings, old friends, new friends, bbq, deals, hookups, checkins, random conversations, acquisition rumors and much, much more.” – how would you not like this?

Maybe one day I will attend SXSW but for now I will just think of all the cool things I would have seen. (An owl bus sponsored by Hootsuite)

Oh sorry I didnt see you there…..

I am a pretty clumsy person, i often trip, run into people, and fall when I am walking around. It gets worse when you put a phone in my hand, I am the person that will walk into a glass door when I am texting. I do not text when i drive, I have learned quickly that that is not a good idea; and i think the population is catching on to this trend of not texting while driving. One thing that could affect safety and would make this situation worse would be interactive glasses. And guess what, Google is putting out smart eyewear by the end of the year. Glasses that you can wear and walk around streets, talking to yourself, finding out what is around you, and of course advertisements. In the past there have been many futuristic movies that use glasses like this or a screen over your face that tells you information……well its actually happening. Google thinks these glasses will become popular because it will free up  your hands and give you all the information in your line of vision. I think it is a horrible idea, the fact that little blurbs of information are going to be popping up in your vision is a recipe for disaster. Google does not want people to wear these glasses constantly, but I could see the population taking this new technology and abusing it. If people are focusing on how to work their glasses, relying on the glasses for information, and entertained constantly they are likely to wear these glasses all the time. I do not know if these glasses will be successful but I do think other things like this are going to be developing in the next few years. I have heard about a helmet you wear when you are playing video games or watching movies to really immerse in the virtual world you are visiting. I am more supportive of these products because the people wearing them are not mobile, they are sitting in their house on their couch. I am curious to see how the technological world and eyewear companies will respond to this new innovative idea. This idea will affect social media, marketing, business, safety, and many other industries.

The people wearing Google’s Glasses will be everywhere, driving, in line at starbucks, at work, always distracted, always zoning out, never paying attention to you. I am not a violent person but the first person that is wearing these glasses that runs into me will get a nice little shove. (well probably not this cute little kid)

If you want to know more about these google glasses just google it!

My 5 Favorite Comedic Twitter Accounts

I love twitter. It is my favorite social media site. It is a great place to keep up with your friends and the news. Twitter is an easy way to stay in contact with your favorite celebrity or musician. It is also a great place to follow comedians or spoofs of celebrities. These are my 5 favorite comedic twitter accounts.

5. Rob Delaney is a comedian based out of L.A.. His twitter account is so popular that Comedy Central has offered him a TV show based around the crude tweets. Through twitter he threatened to sue Kim Kardashian after her divorce for making money on a fake wedding. Most of the tweets are too crude for me but I know a ton of guys who think he is hysterical.

“It looks like the last calories Angelina Jolie consumed were when she drank that vial of Billy Bob Thornton’s blood.”

4. Shit Nobody Says is a twitter account based off the Shit _____ Says internet sensation. This account states things that no one would say. I find myself laughing out loud when this pops up on my twitter feed. Out of all the Shit___Says this is my favorite account. Shit White Girls Say is a close second.

“I’m not sure.. You should Bing it.”

“My bubble yum still has flavor.”

3. Ghetto Hikes is a twitter account from a guy names Cody who writes down things kids say when they are hiking. It is a combination of everything you have heard kids say mixed with an urban lifestyle.

“We thought Thurman ova there havin’ a seizure, turns out he just excited about nature.”

2. The Dark Lord is my 2nd favorite humorous twitter account. Based off the Harry Potter character Lord Voldemort this account tweets about trends and Harry Potter. This account relates current trends and events to the books. Its like getting a little blurb of Harry Potter daily.

“Anybody who responds with ‘Are you Sirius?’ about JK Rowling’s new book is getting Avada Kedavraed. #RowlingReturns
1. Old Man Search is literally the funniest twitter account I follow even though it tweets less than once a month. The basis of this twitter is a guy told his dad twitter was google and the dad types in searches into tweets. I don’t know if it is real but I have cried because I was laughing so hard at some of the posts. If you get anything out of this post go to twitter and follow this account.

Is Your Klout Score Better Than Mine?

Employers are looking at the internet before they hire you and how they judge you by what is on the internet. I have heard this from classes, my job, and my parents for years but two weeks ago I learned people are rating you based on your Klout score. Mark Schaefer came into my social media class and talked to us about Klout Scores and answered our questions about the new website. A Klout score takes your influence on the Internet and gives it a number so you can compare yourself to other people. Two weeks ago I had a Klout score of a 32 and now, I have a Klout score of 51……I don’t know how I increased it by 20 points in a week but I did. Over the past few weeks I have been trying to increase my twitter outreach and get involved on social media sites more. This might be the reason behind the rise in my score but I am not sure why my score increase so quickly. I have also been focusing on one industry that I find fascinating and following leaders in the field and blogging about it. I would think Klout would notice this trend, but when I log on it says I am an influencer over the TV show House, Virginia (my name), and shoes. I do not tweet about any of these subjects in the sense they think I do. The website shows your network impact, amplification, and true reach over the past month in a graph. All of my charts look the same; they are very flat until the day I signed up for Klout. The day I signed up for Klout the graphs skyrocket. I do think it is related to me signing up for their website. I do not think Klout is accurate but I do think employees are looking at it. You can go to this website and sign up to find your Klout Score. You can also read Mark’s new book all about Klout scores if you are really curious about the way it works. If you think the Klout score is accurate or have more information to share with me please comment because I am not a believer yet.

Ex(Kyoo)se me…Can I Have Your Attention?

I am a Kyoo Social Media Intern at Pyxl this semester, I work mostly with the website Kyoo. Interning at Pyxl in Knoxville has been great. I have learned so much about the internet and using social networks to network yourself and businesses. I am in charge of 5 Kyoos for the next two weeks and would love for yall to check them out! Let me know what you find helpful and what you dont like about the site or just explore all the kyoos!

What is Kyoo? (pronounced Q)

Kyoo is a social media aggregator. It is a website that brings together tweets, statuses, pictures, videos, blogs, and other pages on the internet about a certain topic. It is used by internet users and companies to see who, what, when, where, and how people are looking at their product/event/or topic. You can visit Kyoos and see what people are saying about topics from all over the world. It is a great way to find a lot of information on the web about one thing because it compiles it for you!

I could literally stare at this Kyoo all day! A compilation of all tweets, status, pictures, videos, blog posts, and everything about music festivals all in one place. Try it out tweet something about a music festival and instantly your tweet will be included into the stream. Looking at this Kyoo is getting me so excited for Bonnaroo and making me wish I could go to Coachella and all the other music festivals.  Good thing this is one of my Kyoos because I LOVE IT.

This next Kyoo of mine is for the Red Hot Chili Peppers fans. Keep up with the RHCP fan base and band. See pictures and videos and always stay up to date on where they are playing or recording. I love this because RHCP is a great band with a huge following. It is so interesting to see how far people will travel to see them. I know 2/5 members of my family will be seeing them this year. Will You?

This one is for all you manly men out there. A whole Kyoo dedicated to Grilling. I decided to pick this Kyoo because my dad, uncles, and older brother are extreme grill masters and i knew they could use this kyoo to find great recipes. There isnt a lot of grilling going on in the winter months but for those brave souls that venture out to the grill in the snow or for those lucky devils who dont experience winter here is a kyoo for you. Find great reciepes and ideas for grilling at this kyoo:

I am really excited to have this Kyoo, The Voice is a reality TV show on NBC and after watching it once I knew the show was going to cause a lot of hype. Its a mix of American Idol, the X factor, and pin the tail on the donkey. The audition process is blind so the judges rely on the voice of the artist. There is one more week of blind auditions then the actual competition will get underway. Watch this Kyoo to see what team is the crowd favorite, see who is trash talking who, and stay up to date with the contestants and judges.

I picked this Kyoo for all my NBA fans out there (aka all my friends from Memphis that are obsessed with the Grizzlies). Working with this Kyoo is going to help me out a lot when all my friends start talking about the Grizzlies and the NBA. I usually have no idea what they are talking about but now I will and you can too!

So please check out all my Kyoos, it is a very entertaining website and you can learn a lot from visiting for just a few minutes.

My top secret plan to get more viewers to my blog.

I read an article on Mark Schaefer’s blog {grow} yesterday about using pinterest to get more traffic to your business or blog. You can read the article here if you are interested. The article talks about the success of one small online business who has seen an increase in website traffic daily since she started pinning her products. I thought this was a genius idea and I immediately pinned the pictures I already have on my blog. This blog post is going to be going to be used for  just that. So here we go.

These are all pictures i have found in the past few years on the internet that i have saved to a lonely unused folder on my computer and now they are finally getting some use! Also you can see a few of my interests in this blog post, the mountains, furniture, Bonnaroo Music Festival, and animals.

Well lets see if my idea works, happy blogging.

P.S. Here is some shameless self promotion:

I posted the photos 3 minutes ago. Lets just hope some of these people will try to find out where these photos came from:
